RSS in attendance at the West African Road Safety Organization Conference

A six men Road Safety delegate departed Liberia on the 2nd of July 2024 to attend the 11th West Africa Road Safety Organization (WARSO) Conference held in Conakry, Guinea scheduled from the 3rd to the 5th of July 2024 under the theme: “Towards a mid-term review of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety (2021-2030): Lead Agencies Appraisals”.

The Liberia delegate was led by the Assistant Coordinator of Road Safety and Ministry of Transport Tarnue Jarboi; team members include Barbes B. Dawodu of the Ministry of Public Works, Leawon L. Gweh of Liberia National Police, Peter Daytuah of the Ministry of Education, Alex Brent of Ministry of Health and Hon. Emmanuel M. Korvah of the National Legislature.

During the conference, the team was represented by Peter Daytuah of the Ministry of Education who deliberated on several issues during his presentation ranging from Road Safety awareness and sensitization, infrastructure development, education, enforcement, and post-crash. He also emphasizes on the challenges in terms of current status as a secretariat and various shortfalls including capacity building, lack of equipment, and logistics to fully implement road safety and procedures. He also highlighted the need for Liberia to ascend from secretariat to commissioner or agency level to get on pile with other West African States.

Hon. Emmanuel M. Korvah of the Liberia National Legislature spoke on behalf of the parliament and guaranteed legislative support to foster the advancement of Road Safety in Liberia. 

The delegate attained significant progress after a round table meeting with the Corp Marshal of Nigeria Shehu Mohammed and other countries' delegates on several progress-driven discussions.

The West Africa Road Safety Organization (WARSO) came into existence in Abuja Nigeria 8th May 2008 under the auspices of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The conference brought together fifteen countries in the ECOWAS and Morocco, with the latter sharing information on the African position towards the 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety in Marrakech next February.
