Gol Launches Road Safety Awareness Campaign in Rural Liberia

In the wake of the increase rate of motor accidents in the country and part of efforts to curb the situation to save lives, properties and ensure socio-economic development. The Government of Liberia through the Road Safety Secretariat (RSS) which comprises the Ministries of Transport, Public Works, Education, Justice/LNP and Health stationed at the Ministry of Transport has conducted successfully.

Road Safety Awareness and Sensitization campaign under the theme: “No Need to Speed” was launched by the Secretariat in Bong, Margibi, Grand Bassa and Cape Mount counties from February 7-19, 2021 respectively aimed at providing road safety education for drivers, motorcyclists, pedestrians, marketers, students, workers among others to help reduce the alarming rate of motor accidents across the country.

During the conduct of the awareness campaign, the RSS held stakeholder’s meetings and Trainers-of-Trainers (TOT) workshops in the counties for the first time to help educate drivers, community dwellers, students, local authorities, and marketers, leadership of transport unions and students community. Printed t-shirts with Road safety messages and brochures, flyers were also distributed and stickers posted at different location to sensitize people to see need to take road safety serious.

In October 2018, the President of Liberia, His Excellency George M. Weah launched the road safety program at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for implementation of a 5-year program with different pillars and funding from the World Bank and the African Development bank (ADB). In November 2019, the Secretariat embarked on these programs by initiating several road safety public awareness activities in Nimba, Bong and Margibi counties but was interrupted by the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020.

The RSS has also worked closely with the Liberia National to establish a accident database center at the LNP Headquarters to help track accident reports to help Government and partners research and make informed road safety decisions. Moreover the Secretariat has also provided to the LNP accident related equipment such as breath analyzers, road cones, and speed guns. The supply and installation of counties welcome signs, street and traffic warning signs among others are among some of the major achievements of the Secretariat. The Secretariat during the outbreak of the COVID-19 immensely sensitize members of the transport sector and help with the  distribution of COVID-19 prevention materials in Monrovia and its environs which included cartoons of chloride, nose masks, sanitizers, tide soaps,  t-shirts, thermometers etc. Currently, the Secretariat has embarked on the compilation of a synchronized a road safety curriculum to be used by driving schools in Liberia.
